Helenium autumnale, or commonly referred to as Sneezeweed, is a long-lived perennial that is native to the United States. The blooms have a central cone of yellow or brown, and the petals range in colors from red, yellow, mahogany and some are bi-colored. Helenium is a profuse bloomer and bees love its nectar. Sneezeweed has foliage that can be an irritation to some people, but the flowers are allergen-free. Wear gloves the first few times handling the plant. Start the seed indoors 6 – 8 weeks before the last expected frost. Press the seeds into the soil covering it very lightly. Keep the seed moist until germination. With temperatures of 70F, germination is normally within 21 days. Transplant outdoors after frost danger has passed. Space the plants 24 inches apart. For areas with a long growing season, the seed can be planted directly outdoors once temperatures are consistently warm. Grow in full sun and in moist, well-drained soil. Deadhead the spent blooms to keep them performing their best. Cut Helenium back to the ground after flowering. The plant can be divided every few years for optimum performance.
