Cuphea ignea coan is a unique flowering plant that should be considered an annual in temperate areas and started each spring fresh from seed. The common name is Mexican Cigar Plant, and as one might imagine, the blooms are long and cylinder shaped. This variety has rose colored blooms, and they are produced from late spring up until the first frosts. The plant itself is rather bushy and rounded with attractive glossy, dark green leaves. In frost free zones, the foliage is evergreen. Start the seed indoors 4 - 6 weeks before the last expected frost in the spring. Press the seed into the soil firmly but do not cover it. Keep the seed moist and with temperatures of 70F, germination usually occurs within 15 days.
