Carex (Carex buchananii Red Rooster) - Commonly known as Leatherleaf Sedge, this little has all that you want in an ornamental grass. It readily grows from Carex seed, and it has a dense, tufted, arching habit with narrow evergreen foliage. The leaves of this ornamental grass are copper-red to light brown in color. Leatherleaf Sedge Red Rooster prefers moist soil and does best in mild, cool climates. Ornamental sedges are great in the border, in mass plantings, or near a water garden. Incorporated into a container or mixed bed, ornamental Carex grass provides textural interest to complement both blooming plants and other foliage. It is tolerant of almost any soil and even makes an excellent bog plant. Carex Red Rooster ornamental grass reaches 24 inches tall and hardy. How To Grow Carex From Ornamental Grass Seed: Use small pots filled with seed starting mix. Place the Carex seeds onto the soil and cover thinly with sand or soil. To help keep the ornamental grass seed moist until germination occurs, cover the pots with clear plastic wrap. Move the Carex seedlings to direct sunlight once they have sprouted, either in a south facing window or greenhouse and remove the plastic wrap. Transplant the Carex plants into progressively larger containers as they grow. A mature Carex plant can be transplanted outdoors into its permanent place usually within one full growing season.
