Wormwood (Artemisia absinthium) is a perennial herb found mainly in Europe and North America. Absinthium means “without sweetness,” as wormwood herb has a truly bitter flavor. Because of its bitterness, wormwood dried has been used in multiple preparations as well as to flavor alcoholic drinks for centuries. Although it’s best known as an ingredient in absinthe, wormwood leaf was also historically grown in gardens or dried and hung inside the house to keep unwanted bugs away.* Wormwood artemisia was historically used in 18th century England in mead and beer-making.
