Oregon (Mahonia aquifolium) is an evergreen shrub up to 1 m high, forming thickets due to overgrowth of root offspring. The bark on the young shoots is pinkish-gray, on the old ones is brownish-gray, with longitudinal stripes. Leaves are complex, pinnate, leathery, dark green above, glossy, pale green. Flowers are collected in multi-flowered panicles; light yellow, bright, often with a lemon tint. The berries are oblong-elliptic; up to 10 mm long, up to 8 mm wide, bluish-black, with a plentiful bluish coating, covered with fluff. Seeds are oblong, shiny. Flowering is in April - May. The fruits ripen in August - September.
