There's much to love about Brazil nut, besides their generous size and creamy taste. Of all the nuts, they take the prize for having the most intriguing backstory (do tell!).
Here goes: Brazil nuts are seeds that grow in ponderous pods-we're talking over five pounds, each one containing as many as two dozen seeds-on these towering trees that can grow to 160 feet high and live as long as 500 years. During the harvest season, these pods will let loose and fall to the ground at the rate of about 50 miles an hour. Then the real fun begins, since it requires a pretty powerful axe to crack open the tough shell-or the services of the agouti, the only animal with the mandibles to gnaw right through.
What really makes Brazil nuts so exceptional, though, is that they are mostly harvested from trees that still grow in the wild, with just a small smattering farmed on plantations. And get this: There's only one insect that's up to the job of pollinating the supersized seeds, and that's the poetically named orchid bee. It just doesn't get more authentic than that. You'll never chomp on a Brazil nut the same way again.
