L-Carnitine is biosynthesized primarily in animal liver and kidneys from the amino acids lysine or methionine. Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) is essential to the generation of L-carnitine. L-Carnitine is required in all living cells for the transport of fatty acids from the cytosol into the mitochondria during the breakdown of lipids (or fats) for the generation of metabolic energy. L-Carnitine also carries of small-chain and medium-chain fatty acids out of the mitochondria in order to, among other things, maintain normal coenzyme A levels in these organelles.
