Product Description
The first (and currently only) documentary about one of New Orleans' most colorful ceremonies. "New Orleans Jazz Funerals ... from the Inside" delves into the fascinating history and evolution of this unique celebration of life and death. You'll learn what it means to "cut the body lose" and dance in the "second line". Hosted and narrated by the late, great jazz trumpeter Milton Batiste, this program is as authentic as it gets.
Review
"... the most thorough and extensive piece of TV journalism on a subject that is an enduring curiosity for many locals, and utterly confounding to visitors." --
New Orleans times-Picayune, August 17, 1995
From the Contributor
I began shooting Jazz funerals in the early 80's while working on a concert series with Olympia Brass Band. Since funerals are unpredictable, I shot on many diffenent formats (whatever I could get on short notice). Over the years I got to know the members of Olympia quite well and ended up traveling with them to Great Britain twice where I shot two more Jazz funerals. This program is the real story of Jazz funerals from those who were at the heart of them. Working on this documentary with Milton Batiste and Olympia Brass Band was a pleasure and an honor.
