"One of the earliest and most ardent press agents New England ever had was Capt. John Smith. To drum up interest in 'those spatious Tracts of Land,' the 'Admiral of New England' issued in 1616 a glowing prospectus, with a map." A more modern representation of the region, published in July 1975, this map is a part of the "Close-up: U.S.A." series, and accompanied an article on Cape Cod and the travel poster New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusettes, Rhode Island, Connecticut: Mountains, Seacost, and a Living Legacy..

This New England map contains an abundance of historical notes overlaying the fine cartography for which National Geographic is known. Explore the rich history and vibrant modern sites of Vermont, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Connecticut, and Rhode Island. This attractive mid-century map features iconic National Geographic coloring, and draws attention to the western New England states by muting out neighboring regions.

Interestingly, Maine does not appear on this map. It accompanied another in the "Close-up" series, featuring the state and Canada's maritime provinces in March 1975. This map is drawn in the Albers Conic Equal-Area projection, which uses two standard parallels between which distortion is minimized, however scale and shape are not preserved.

A vibrant and unique conversation piece, this map is a must-have for any collector and makes a fine companion to the map of New England published in 1955.
