"No enemy is likely to overcome us unless he first possesses Western Europe, which is still the strategic pivot of the world. From ancient towns to modern airports and occupation zones, the Western Europe map shows our kinship in history and culture with this old and populous part of the world, and its strategic importance in the age of airplanes and radio." Published in December 1950, this map accompanied the article "Mid-century Holland Builds Her Future."

This mid-century map is a fantastic and vividly colorful snapshot of the political realities of western Europe once the dust settled from the end of the Second World War five years earlier. The status of the Saarland region - placed under French control from the end of the war until five years after the publication of this map - and minor adjustments in Germany's boundary with the Netherlands, Luxembourg, and France were provisional at the time, pending the finalization of a peace treaty with Germany.

Occupation zones in Germany and Austria during WWII by the English, French, Russians and Americans remind the reader of the sheer scale of devastation brought about by the war. This map is drawn in the Albers Conic Equal-Area projection, which uses two standard parallels between which distortion is minimized, however scale and shape is not preserved.

This vintage map is truly a unique conversation piece. The mid-century coloring and style makes it a must have for any decor. Historians of the Second World War and the Cold War will love this beautiful production.
