In 1945 as World War II wound down, two U.S. Army colonels drew a line through Korea dividing it into temporary occupation zones where the United States and Soviet Union would accept the surrender of Japanese forces. Pouring over a map, they chose the 38th parallel. The Soviets agreed. This arbitrary line soon became entrenched, leaving each half of Korea fated to become a Cold War pawn. Friction between the communist North and Western-allied South erupted into war in 1950. Published in July 2003, this map is half of a two-map set with The Two Koreas.

This educational map explores Korea with astonishing detail, providing historical context through the aftermath of the Korean War. From the seeds of strife to the politically-charged division that continues to impact global relations to this day, this engaging map offers insight into this enduring conflict. More than three million casualties and decades later, the two Koreas remain technically at war, locked in an unending stalemate.

This map includes multiple insets detailing political and military strategies from the historical tensions with Japan to current continued blockade. A central map outlines the proceedings from September 15-November 24, 1950, beginning with the Battle of Inchon and finishing with the failed "Home By Christmas" offensive.

A compelling piece for collectors and those interested in the background and continued impacts of the Korean War. This map makes a wonderful companion to the Two Koreas, with which this map was featured as a two-part set.
