This classic World Map, published in 1988, showcases cartographic excellence and fine attention to detail, using strong colours, detailed geographical information and several stunning and informative insets. A perfect addition to any home, office or classroom.

Published on the National Geographic centennial in 1988 as a companion to the article "Earth '88: Will We Mend Our Earth?", this map was created three years before the collapse of the Soviet Union and the official end of the Cold War. It represents the desire to best represent the earth using up-to-date cartographic techniques

This milestone map is drawn in the Robinson projection, which more accurately represents the curvature of the earth and minimizes the distortion of the regions around the poles. The north is more accurately represented than in the Van der Grinten projection of the previous 45 years. It was hoped the map's main legacy would be a generation of map readers more critical of flat maps that play tricks "with the round shape of the world we inhabit."

This World Map's less biased representation of the world made it perfect for a general reference map. Insets of the north and south polar regions, Eastern and Western Hemisphere physical geography in satellite-inspired images, and Religions of the World and Population maps newly displayed in Boggs eumorphic projection give this map a much more modern feel than its predecessors.

A must have for historians and those interested in the zeitgeist of the late 20th century, this map is a unique conversation piece on its own or with other 20th century works: track the evolution of National Geographic's legendary cartography and of political boundaries with companion pieces from the 1920s to 1980s!
