"Megalopolis" was the tag given in 1961 to this densely-populated region of the United States, a 500-mile stretch from Boston to Washington, D.C.. Urbanites flocked to new suburbs where land, housing, and gasoline for commuting downtown by automobile were still cheap - and travel times were still short. Now, all along the urban choker, tendrils of growth have entwined into webs described by a new tag: gridlock. This map of the "Megalopolis" region of America was published in July 1994 as half of a two-map set with Boston to Washington, Circa 1830.

This informative map perfectly represents the urban sprawl and the "tendrils of growth" that have expanded outward from city centers up the northern Atlantic coast. Major highways, railways, and notes about the increasing challenges of overpopulation provide a good picture of the Megalopolis region - one that has only grown in size since publication.

This map is drawn in the Albers Conic Equal-Area projection, which uses two standard parallels between which distortion is minimized, however scale and shape are not preserved.

This intriguing map is perfect for those interested in exploring the evolution of the "Megalopolis" region from half a century ago to today. A perfect companion to Boston to Washington, Circa 1830, the other half of this two-map set, and Washington to Boston, published in 1962.

Printed on high quality canvas, that brings out the artistic quality of this map. 5 inches of additional material is included on each side so that you have enough material to have the map stretched on a frame while preserving the integrity of the product.

Your map is rolled and packaged in a sturdy tube to protect it during shipment.
