Additional Features Given the Brangelina publicity at the time of Mr. and Mrs. Smith's theatrical run, an "unrated" version of the film sounds too tantalizing to be true. Well, it is. A more accurate, less misleading name would have been R-Rated Director's Cut, which is pretty much the purpose of this DVD, as director Doug Liman says. Now able to show footage he'd cut to get the PG-13 rating and to appease studio execs, who were too nervous about the off-screen rumors to let him screen it for test audiences, Liman waxes candidly in a brand-new commentary about his second big studio (or as he calls it, "sellout") film. He freely acknowledges the potent chemistry between his co-stars during production and the conundrum they all found themselves in on how to market the movie. The Director's Cut includes a few new expository scenes of the polite-yet-strained relationship between Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie's characters; more snappy marriage-counseling bits, and a slightly more brutal fight between the Smiths in their house. And yes, there's a (few seconds) longer, R-rated version of the sex scene. The second disc includes a comprehensive "film school" from Liman on all the technical aspects, including animated storyboards and unused action scenes, an extensive making-of documentary, and deleted scenes with entire subplots that were dropped (Angela Bassett and Keith David as villains in one version, Terence Stamp and Jacqueline Bisset as villains in another). There's also a good gag reel and an alternate ending that eerily shows Pitt and Jolie with their young daughter (shot well before the pair had a baby girl in real life).
