Long a popular folk art form in colonial Spanish and Mexican culture, retablos are devotional paintings depicting divine icons and symbols, particularly Catholic patron saints. Chosen as representations and guardians of particular occupations and life situations, patron saints are often turned to in times of need or to express gratitude for a blessing. Displayed in homes to honor the saint or given as gifts of fortune and inspiration, retablos reflect a beloved historical tradition and cultural artistry. Made by hand in the USA, this retablo plaque honors St Gertrude of Nivelles. An original design by the artist, her art print is decoupaged upon carved pine wood in traditional form. The reverse side includes a hole for wall hanging and a story of the saint's life. Gertrude was born in 621 to a wealthy family in Belgium. Many a suitor wanted her hand in marriage for the wealth of her estate. After the death of her father, she and her pious mother committed Gertrude to Christ. When suitors continued, they founded a monastery on the family estate (the Abbey of Nivelles) of which Gertrude became Abbess. She was known for her generosity and compassion and cats were kept at the abbey to control mice. At the ate of 30 she relinquished her position to devote her time to study and prayer and would be remembered for 2 miracles. Gertrude is often depicted with mice running upon her staff. The mice are said to be the souls in purgatory rising up into Heaven. For this reason, she has been regarded as invoked against rodents and as the patroness of cats. 'St Gertrude, you were known for your compassion and generosity. Help watch over my cat, a joyful blessing from the great creator. May she be healthy, happy and safe in all her adventures'
