Long a popular folk art form in colonial Spanish and Mexican culture, retablos are devotional paintings depicting divine icons and symbols, particularly Catholic patron saints. Chosen as representations and guardians of particular occupations and life situations, patron saints are often turned to in times of need or to express gratitude for a blessing. Displayed in homes to honor the saint or given as gifts of fortune and inspiration, retablos reflect a beloved historical tradition and cultural artistry. Made by hand in the USA, this retablo plaque honors Saint Drogo. An original design by the artist, her folk-style art print is decoupaged upon handcarved pine wood in traditional form. The reverse side includes a hole for hanging and a story of the saint's life. Born a Flemish nobleman in 1105, Saint Drogo was orphaned as a teenager. At 18, he gave up his worldly possessions and became a penitential pilgrim and made multiple pilgrimages to Rome. He became a shepherd, where it is said he could be seen in multiple places at one time, often seen both tending his sheep and at mass (this miraculous ability to multitask would lead to him being adopted as the patron saint of coffee in the 19th century). After contracting a disease in his twenties that left him disfigured, which frighted townspeople, he went to live in a cell attached to the church. He remained there in prayer for the remainder of his life, only having contact with others through a window to receive food and the Holy Eucharist. Legend says the church and cell once caught fire, but the fire left Drogo unscathed. Today, Saint Drogo is recognized as the patron saint of coffee, baristas, and those who others find repulsive.
