The angle finder tool is an essential tool for grinding and honing, providing easy and accurate checking of all grinding and honing angles. The gauge features a hole for belt or keyring fixing and is designed with safety in mind - all sharp edges have been radiused. The circular cut-out at the top of the bevel apex allows for accurate checking without the cutting edge coming into contact with the gauge body.
As a general guide, for firm chisel work, it is recommended to grind at 25° and hone at 30°. For mortice chisels, grind at 27° or 30° and hone at 35°, while for delicate paring, grind at 20° and hone at 25°. High-pitched planes may be honed at 35° to reduce chatter. If the cutting edge appears to crumble, try increasing the angle. The gauge also includes measurements for engineers' twist drills at 120°, centre drills at 60°, and turning gouges at 45°.
Experience may require modification of angles to suit prevailing conditions of use, such as a chisel make of brittle steel or when working with dense hardwoods.
