Low lead or Lead Free Law: On January 4, 2011 Congress signed into law the “Reduction of Lead in Drinking Water Act”. This bill amends the Safe Drinking Water Act by limiting the amount of lead for products that are in contact with drinking water to a maximum content of 0.25%. This law will take effect in January, 2014. After that it will be illegal to install products that do not meet the lead free requirements as defined in this bill. Manufacturers and importers will no longer be able to sell products that do not meet the new standards. In the future, municipalities, water companies, contractors, manufacturers and distributors will no longer be able to sell or use any products that have more than 0.25% lead content. What products are effected? The new law names any pipe, pipe fittings, plumbing valves, water supply lines and any fixtures which include water works, brass and faucet components that come in contact with potable water.
