This is a numbered plate block of 4 stamps - (not a single as is in photograph) On May 24 1984 in Shawnee, OK the USPS honored one of the most versatile athletes in modern sports. Thorpe, a Native American Indian and European American, won Olympic gold medals in the pentathlon and decathlon, played American football at the collegiate and professional levels, also played professional baseball and basketball. The Associated Press named him the greatest athlete of the first half of the 20th century. Thorpe died in 1953 at the age of 64.
