Chevrolet launched its improved version of the third generation El Camino in 1971, which included larger headlamps, a grille and modified bumpers. In 1971, the engines required less compression for those using low-octane unleaded fuel, and GM's A.I.R. system, a "smog bomb," controlled exhaust emissions. Power and performance were reduced, and the standard version was a 250ci 6-cylinder engine with 145 hp. They also launched the sportier versions that had small-block V8 engines of 307 and 350 cubic centimeters delivering 245 to 270 hp, and large-block V8s of 402 and 454 cubic centimeters delivering 300 to 365 hp.
