Gene began his career as a professor at Wayne State University in Michigan. When he returned to New York he took a job as an editor for Ace Books. He wrote several screenplays and plays including the off-Broadway-produced Go Show Me a Dragon (1960). With his friend Max Gartenberg, he edited The Beat Generation & the Angry Young Men (1958, Citadel Press), an anthology of such writers as Anatole Broyard, Jack Kerouac, Clellon Holmes, J.P.
