Produced by prominent American landscape painter, lithographer, and photographer John B. Bachelder this bird-eye perspective depicting the battlefield of Gettysburg would go on to become his most noted work. Bachelder was well known as the preeminent historian of the Battle of Gettysburg in the nineteenth century. His work would lead to the preservation and memorialization of the site in the late nineteenth century. He performed extensive research and site visits to field hospitals to develop this landscape which was released in the fall of 1863. He claimed to have interviewed every commander of the Army of the Potomac as well as wounded soldiers in field hospitals to develop a historical account of the battle. In 1873 Bachelder published a guidebook of the battle based on his site visits and research.

The Battle of Gettysburg is considered one of the major turning points in the Civil War and was responsible for the most significant number of casualties in the entire conflict. General George Mead successfully halted Confederate General Lee’s advance into the North at Gettysburg. The battle has been considered the moment the Union showed decisive military force over the south and marked the beginning of the end for Confederate forces.

On November 19, 1863, President Lincoln marked the dedication of the Gettysburg National Cemetery and gave his historic Gettysburg Address, which redefined the purpose of the war and rallied support behind Union forces. The unique aesthetic and distinctive style immediately transport the viewer back in time, creating an indelible bond.
