Maryland had been one of the thirteen original colonies and was the thirteenth State to ratify the Constitution, and the seventh State to join the Union in 1778. Maryland donated the land that would become the nation's capital Washington DC to George Washington in 1790. During the War of 1812, Baltimore came under attack from British forces but launched a successful defense from Fort McHenry.The Chesapeake Bay provided fertile fishing grounds, as well as a robust port economy that allowed the region to prosper.
