Produced by one of the most commercially successful cartographers and illustrators of the time Fielding Lucas Jr, this depiction of Maryland in 1841 shows the State in a time of significant growth and development. Based in Baltimore, Lucas' work was highly regarded during the 19th century, and his maps were compiled and published in some of the most prominent Atlases. Maryland had been one of the thirteen original colonies and was the thirteenth State to ratify the Constitution, and the seventh State to join the Union in 1778. Maryland donated the land that would become the nation's capital Washington DC to George Washington in 1790. During the War of 1812, Baltimore came under attack from British forces but launched a successful defense from Fort McHenry. The Chesapeake Bay provided fertile fishing grounds, as well as a robust port economy that allowed the region to prosper. Maryland's largest city Baltimore was expanding during the middle of the 19th century with immigrants flooding onlooking for relief from famines and civil unrest in Western Europe and Ireland. Immigrant communities flourished and established neighborhoods with distinct cultural values. Baltimore's Inner Harbor was the second largest port in America and supported thriving intercontinental shipping allowing the city to experience prosperity and development. Manufacturing also supported the local economy. The 1840s marked a period of growth as the Mid Atlantic seaboard imported goods, and the expansion of railroad lines into the interior of the nation allowed more accessible transportation.
