Published in 1796 following massive fires that destroyed much of the town center, including Christ Church, the first established church in the city. As the oldest city in Georgia, Savannah has a rich history and is one of the American south's most iconic cities. Savannah was a thriving and prosperous city throughout the nineteenth century and was the southernmost part of the original thirteen colonies. It was the original state capital and the strategic location on the Savannah River.

The city had been held from 1778 to 1782 by British forces during the American Revolution and flourished in the years following the conclusion of the conflict.
