Hibiscus (Hibiscus Sabdariffa) grows as an annual herbaceous plant and reaches a height of 2 to rarely 3 meters. Most vegetative parts of the plant have soft hairs. The upright stem is purple in color. The leaves are petiolate 2 to 8 cm long. There are two different types of leaf blades: egg-shaped and finger-shaped, three-lobed with narrow tips. The filiform stipules are about 1 cm long. The flowers stand individually in the leaf axils. The large (6 to 7 cm in diameter) flowers are hermaphrodite, radially symmetrical and five-fold. The side goblet has eight to twelve red lobes that grow together at the base and are 5 to 15 × 2 to 3 mm in size. The five purple, fleshy sepals are jug-shaped over a third of their length. The five petals are yellow and at the bottom dark red. The five-fold capsule fruit is egg-shaped to spherical with a diameter of about 1.5 cm.
