Mercedes (Amber Riley) and Kurt (Chris Colfer) make an unexpected choice, Sue (Jane Lynch) meets and makes a music video with guest star Olivia Newton-John, and the club performs in the regionals in the emotion-packed finale, called "Journey" both for the music that first put them on the map and for the long road they took to get there. Music-wise, the quality remains high. "The Power of Madonna" is a complete episode showcasing the music of the Material Girl, and Lady Gaga songs are featured in a later episode, "Theatricality." Chenoweth sparkles on a duet with Morrison of "One Less Bell to Answer" and "A House Is Not a Home," and in one sensational episode directed by Joss Whedon, guest star Neil Patrick Harris sings "Dream On" with Morrison, Menzel and Michele sing "I Dreamed a Dream," and Artie (Kevin McHale) performs "Safety Dance." The season finale is an explosion of classic Journey and Queen during the competition, and tenderness afterward. While some people may only watch Glee's musical numbers, it's knowing the characters behind the songs that gives them their emotional punch, a major reason the show resonated with audiences so well during its first season.
