THIS IS A NUMBERED PLATE BLOCK OF 4 STAMPS AS PICTURED. ~ On October 24, 1967 in Lexington, VA; The US Post Office Dept. issued an addition to the Prominent Americans series, honoring George Marshall, American military leader, Chief of Staff of the Army, Secretary of State, and the third Secretary of Defense. Marshall served valiantly in World War I. He went on to become America's chief military strategist in World War II, leading troops in both Europe and the South Pacific. As Secretary of State, he introduced the European Recovery Plan (known as the Marshall Plan), for which he won the Nobel Peace Prize.
