Brassica juncea   Seed Information Purple Osaka Mustard adds welcomed color and flavor diversity to all kinds of salads or dishes with its striking large purple-streaked green foliage a zesty flavor that leaves a lingering tingle on the tongue. As the temperatures grow hotter, so do the leaves. Whole plants (mature leaves and stems) are prepared as mustard greens, offering a horseradish-like kick that mellows with cooking. Also great for pickling, stir-frying and steaming. Young flowering shoots make good raab (edible flowering stalks). Purple Osaka Mustard is a good plant for permaculture: it makes an edible ground cover that re-seeds freely. Can be grown anytime throughout the growing season. Fairly cold hardy and can be harvested into the fall and with protection, into early winter. Full height is 2 - 3’ when flowering. Prepare as you would any green. A rapid grower, but more compact than Red Giant, mature at 12–14". Broad stems are also succulent. Used like Red Giant for mesclun and braising.   Culture Information Mustard greens can be grown in the spring, summer, and fall, though they prefer an air temperature range of 60 - 75°. Direct sow seeds outdoors anytime from spring through late summer. For baby greens, broadcast sow seeds ½” deep, 60 seeds per square foot. For mature leaves, sow seeds 1” apart in rows 18” apart. Days to germination: 4 - 10. Sow every 3 weeks for continuous harvest or let them re-seed themselves to have low maintenance self-sowing, edible “weeds”. Keep well-watered during hot weather. It can grow in part shade. Tolerant of light frosts.
