On September 12, 1999 in Boston Massachusetts, the USPS honored Frederick Law Olmsted (1822-1903) was the father of professional landscape architecture in America. In 1858, Olmsted and architect Calvert Vaux designed Central Park, America's first great urban park. Olmsted also planned park systems for Seattle, Boston, and Atlanta. A few of his most notable designs include the grounds of the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C., and the layout for the World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago.
