Senecio radicans is one of the classic trailing succulent plants. It makes a fabulous hanger in dish gardens and arrangements. Stems can hang over 3 feet in length in a hanging pot but in its native habitat of South Africa, Namibia and Lesotho, it worms its way across sand and rocks, rooting itself wherever possible. Long green strands have banana shaped leaves, hence the name, and cute little flowers emerge between October and December. Similar to the string of pearls the flowers have a cinnamon scent. If you look closely at the crescent shaped leaves you will notice a translucent window which is where the plant allows sunlight into the leaf interior. Banana strings are fast growers and can tolerate a wide range of temperatures. They will perish in freezing temperatures so we do suggest bringing them indoors during winter months or where temperatures fall below freezing. This senecio will handle higher temperatures better than the average succulent and can withstand drought for a long period of time. You will notice shriveling of the bananas when your plant is very thirsty. We suggest watering once a week in hotter months and every other week in the wintertime. Propagation is easy by cutting and we do recommend trimming your plant regularly to promote new growth. Protect this plant from full, direct sun. It will do best in a bright window or on a patio or porch.
