Two years after the interplanetary war ended, the aliens known as Festum launch a new wave of attacks against the Earth, specifically against the hidden island of Tatsumiyajima. After being nearly blinded in the previous conflict, Kazuki is working as a cook, but when the attacks begin, he climbs into his Fafner and leads the charge. Kazuki must confront a Festum who takes human form and the name Misao Kurasu: he may have been sent by Kazuki's old friend Soshi to try to make peace between the warring races. The original Fafner borrowed heavily from Evangelion, and Misao recalls Kaoru, the Fifth Child. The filmmakers can't seem to decide if they're presenting a high-tech mecha war story or an empathetic portrait of interplanetary misunderstanding. The Neo-UN is once again the enemy of both sides, threatening the idyllic pseudo-Japan of Tatsumiyajima with "Enola-512" bombers. However, fans of Fafner are more interested in exciting CG combat scenes than a nuanced plot, and Heaven and Earth delivers plenty of airborne dogfights that pit the Festum, which look like gold Christmas tree ornaments, against the teen pilots in the flamboyant Fafner mobile suits.
