Cryptanthus bivitattus or Pink Starlite Earth Star is a rare terrestrial bromeliad. Native to South America these plants can be found growing in Brazil's rianforests. Bromeliads typically attach to their growth medium with shallow roots on trees. In contrast, Earth Star has a relatively substantial root system and can be found growing on the ground. These tiny plants average approximately 4 inches in height and only bloom once in their lifetime. When they bloom, flowers appear in a tight white cluster and eventually expire to form 'pups'. Pink Starlite Earth Star has unique color changing foliage, under varied light conditions its variegated leaves will fluctuate from a darker green color to vibrant reddish pink. Earth Stars are frequently recognized for their ability to survive with very little maintenance or care; these bromeliads will tolerate dry or moist soil and thrive in dappled sunlight which makes them excellent houseplants.
