Wombats, echidnas, and duck-billed platypuses slink, scoot, and waddle across the cards in this math-munching game. Division Down Under is a perky skills-and-drills deck for kids learning division and multiplication for number families 2 through 9. The game is played like Go Fish, with kids asking one another for the card needed to make a pair, which they then get to keep. A pair of cards will have an unfinished division problem printed at the top of one card; its answer and its converse multiplication problem (also unfinished) will be on the partner card.

Kids need to know the answer in order to ask for the proper card, and the cards are self-correcting: the Aussie animal pictured on the card will match the one on its mate. Because the deck is divided into subdecks of 16 cards--each focusing on a particular group of math facts--kids aren't trying to conquer too much of the math world at one fell swoop, and retention is more likely to occur. Along the way, the relationship between multiplication and division is reinforced. As an added bonus, the Activity Guide contains tidbits of information about those colorful (not to mention helpful) critters from Down Under. Directions are given in English, French, Spanish, German, and Swedish. One round takes about 10 minutes to play. --Julie Ubben
