Pinus mugo 'Corleys Mat' (Corleys Mat Mugo Pine) * Full sun * Zones 2-8 * 1' tall * 3' wide Dwarf evergreen conifer only grows a foot tall! Perfect for bonsai! Pinus mugo 'Corleys Mat' A dwarf evergreen conifer with rich-green needles. These would be perfect to train into a bonsai. Called “the ground cover pine.” Corley’s Mat grows to about 12 inches in height then gets wider with age. We like to trim to desired height and width for a hardy charming mini pine tree. Or you can let spread as a low canopy to about 3 feet wide at 10 years forming a low mini pine forest. It takes full sun in a wide range of climates and is somewhat drought resistant when established. Needles, which are 1½-2 inches, hold their strong green color year round. Care Information Follow a regular watering schedule during the first growing season to establish a deep, extensive root system. Watering can be reduced after establishment. Feed with a general purpose fertilizer before new growth begins in spring. Pruning time: spring. History P. mugo is native to the high elevation, mountain regions of Central and Southern Europe. It was first introduced into Denmark in 1798 and became widely grown in Europe commercially since 1860. It was often used to stabilize coastal sand dune areas in Norway, Sweden, Germany, Poland, Lithuania, Finland and Estonia. P.m. pumilio variety is native to the Alps regions of Austria and Switzerland, as well as Bulgaria, Romania, Italy and what was once Yugoslavia. Companion Plants: Goes well with Thunderhead Pine, Dragon Eye Pine, Vanderwolf Pyramid Pine as well as Black Bamboo.
