How to Season a Cast Iron Pan
1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
2. Wash the cast iron pan with warm, soapy water and a sponge. Dry it thoroughly with a towel.
3. Coat the entire pan, including the exterior and handle, with a thin layer of vegetable oil or melted shortening.
4. Place the pan upside down on the oven's center rack. Be sure to line the bottom rack with foil to catch any drips.
5. Bake the pan for one hour, then turn off the oven and let the pan cool in the turned off oven.
6. Repeat the process if necessary to develop a smooth, black patina.
7. Once seasoned, avoid using soap when cleaning the pansimply rinse with hot water and scrub if necessary. Dry the pan thoroughly and apply a light coating of oil before storing.
Remember, properly seasoning a cast iron pan is crucial for creating a non-stick cooking surface and ensuring the pan's longevity.
