The Tricolor Sage plant derives its name from the fact that the plant's foliage boasts 3 colors: white, green, and purple. This ornamental herb with its colorful variegated leaves has lovely lavender blue flower spikes that appear mid-summer and attract butterflies and bees to the garden. The Tricolor sage plant reaches a height of 1-2 feet tall and wide, giving it a nice bushy appearance. With its strongly aromatic scent and attractive variegated colored foliage it looks equally good in pots around the patio or planted directly in the garden. It is ideal for herb gardens and mixed borders with its small shrub-like shape. Even though this herb is highly ornamental, it has the same culinary uses as regular garden sage. It can be used fresh or dried in roast pork and lamb dishes, poultry, fish, eggs, vegetable dishes, stuffing, soups and marinades. Place the plants in a full sun location 18 inches apart. They prefer a normal to sandy well-drained soil. If the foliage fails to receive sufficient amounts of sunshine, there will be less purple in the tricolored mix. As with most herbs, special attention should be paid to the requirement for well-drained soil. After established, do not overwater the sage plant as it will rot the plant. Tricolor sage plants are drought-tolerant once established. Cut back the plant in the fall and cover with leaves and grass clippings. If the winter is not too harsh the plant will return in the spring
