Purple Sage Herb plant besides being a multi-purpose herb is a lovely addition to any landscape, kitchen garden or combination planter. Purple sage bears lovely purple flowers which can be a unique addition to flower arrangements and nose gays, and its larges purple tinged leaves make it a more attractive garden plant than regular green garden sage. Despite its flowers and unusual coloring, Purple sage has the same culinary uses as green sage. Sage is used in meat dishes, soups, stuffing, and sausages. The Sage family has antiseptic and antifungal properties. Besides its popular use as a culinary herb, sage is also commonly pressed into service in cosmetics, perfumes, and soaps. Some naturalists rub it on their skin as an insect repellent. Purple Sage has been used to treat depression, insect bites, insomnia and relieve congestion. Hanging dried leaves among woolen clothing deters moths. Burning sage removes unpleasant odors, such as lingering cigarette smoke or cooked fish smells. Place plants 15-18 inches apart in a full sun location with well-draining soil. The plants will reach 15-24 inches tall and will bloom throughout the summer months. It is a perennial herb in zones 5-9, but must be wintered indoors for all other zones. It will attract honey bees and butterflies to your garden and is deer resistant.
