Mountain Fresh Tomatoes are a hybrid tomato developed in North Carolina by NCSU’s Dr. Randy Gardner. Bred for adaptability to rainy cool and moist environments, this tomato is ideal for the gardeners that live in wet, humid or cooler climates. This easy care, heavy bearing midseason producer is the tomato for you. Mountain Fresh tomatoes are bright red firm fruits with a uniformly round shape, ranging in size from 8 to 16 ounces. Great for eating fresh picked, use these tomatoes for sandwiches and salads and their uniform size makes them perfect for preserving and canning also. Place tomato plants 18 -24 inches apart in a sunny garden location in a normal well-draining soil. When planting these and all other tomatoes, plant to a soil depth just beneath the first set of leaves. That first set of leaves (called cotyledon-which means the embryonic first leaves) will eventually fall off. Roots will form along the buried stem, establishing a stronger root, thus a stronger plant. Don’t water too late in the evening. You want the plants to dry thoroughly before night. Too many problems with fungus start when you continuously water tomatoes late in the evening. Mountain Fresh is a determinate plant, meaning that it has a bushier form (rather than a continuously-growing vining habit) and sets its crop of fruit within a short several-week period. The plants will grow 4-5 feet tall and should be ready to harvest starting 70 days from planting.
