The Jalapeno Pepper plant is the most popular chili pepper in the United States. Named for the town of Jalapa, Mexico, the Jalapeno has the distinction of being one of the most adaptable pepper plants around. It can be grown in dry or humid conditions, cold or hot; the Jalapeno Pepper plant will grow anywhere. The Jalapeno is a bushy plant that grows 18- 36 inches tall, and produces three inch long, deep green meaty peppers that have a hot zesty flavor. Another unusual feature of the Jalapeno Pepper plant is that the heat in the peppers can range from 2500-10000 on the Scoville heat index, and this all on the same plant. If the peppers grow fast, get plenty of water, and are harvested soon, they may be milder than peppers that stay on the plant a long time, or that develop slowly and under stressful conditions. The mature 3 inch long Jalapeño fruit is commonly picked and consumed while it is still green, but if it is allowed to fully ripen and turn crimson red, the pepper will be all the hotter for it. Jalapenos are great on nachos, in salsas, or if you smoke the red ones over mesquite chips you can make your own chipotle sauce. Place the plants 14-20 inches apart in a full sun location in a normal well-draining soil. Mulching is recommended to help maintain soil moisture and prohibit weed growth. Water! Keep soil moist, but not soaking wet as Jalapeno peppers love water. Water every other day or every third day. These peppers also do well in a large container too. Harvest in 70-80 days (from seeding), remember to use gloves when handling any chili peppers to avoid the oils from burning your skin
