The Cayenne Long Slim Pepper plant has been a dependable producer in home gardens for years. The bushy 24-30 inch tall Cayenne Long Slim pepper plant produces slim, green, 4-6 inch long fruits that turn red when ripe. Though red colored when ripened, it can also be eaten when it is still green. It is generally rated 30,000- 50,000 Scoville units, so it is hot, but not overly so. It is probably one of the best known chili peppers, and it performs well either being used fresh for salsas and seasoning pickles or dried and ground up or deep frozen too. Their intense flavor adds zest to sauces, salads, soups, stews, dips and dried seasonings. This is one versatile pepper. Just remember as with all hot peppers, use rubber gloves when handling hot peppers to avoid skin burn from the pepper juice. Place plants 18-24 inches apart in a normal well-draining soil. These peppers do best in partial to full sun locations. Mulching around the plants is recommended to help maintain moisture in the soil; these plants prefer a moist soil. Water the base of the plants to avoid splashing water on leaves, fruit or blossoms, which can spread fungal diseases. The Cayenne Long slim is a very productive plant that will reach up to 24-30 inches tall and mature in 75 (green) to 90 (red) days(from seeding).
