The Black Krim tomato plant is an heirloom beefsteak tomato originating in the Crimea peninsula of the Ukraine. These medium-sized, very dark maroon beefsteak tomatoes have a wonderfully rich smoky flavor and a natural saltiness to them making them ideal for people who restrict salt in their diets. The extremely tasty Black Krim is considered to be one of the best “black” tomatoes around. It is heat tolerant and will produce its delicious fruits even under adverse weather conditions. The tomatoes weigh in at 10-16 ounces on average and are about 6” across. Their rich salty flavor and unique color makes them ideal for salads or slicing for sandwiches, they are also a great cooking tomato for your favorite sauces and soups. Place plants 15-24 inches apart in a full sun location. They require a normal well-draining soil with 1-2 inches of water per week. When planting these and all other tomatoes, plant to a soil depth just beneath the first set of leaves. That first set of leaves (called cotyledon-which means the embryonic first leaves) will eventually fall off. Roots will form along the buried stem, establishing a stronger root, thus a stronger plant. Don’t water too late in the evening. You want the plants to dry thoroughly before night. Too many problems with fungus start when you continuously water tomatoes late in the evening. The plants will grow 36-40 inches tall, but will require caging or staking to support the heavy fruit load. Black Krim is an early harvesting tomato, producing a plentiful harvest around 80 days from seeding. Black Krim tomatoes are also suitable for containers and pots
