The Apple Mint plant is an attractive herb that is often used as an ornamental garden plant. It is a hardy and easy to grow herb, but being from the mint family it can become invasive if not kept in check. The soft gray-green leaves of Apple Mint have a wonderful fruity scent - an apple-menthol fragrance that is delightful. Their attractive appearance, with the delicate pink-purple blooms in mid-summer, and wonderful scent make them a wonderful addition to garden borders and walkways. Being an herb, they do have culinary uses too. The leaves of the Apple Mint plant can be used to make apple mint jelly, as a garnish, in salads, or to flavor dishes. It can add a zest to fruit salads, cottage cheese and creams cheeses, or bruise the leaves and use it to flavor ice water or iced teas. One medicinal use is to crush the leaves and apply to bee and insect stings to ease the pain of the area. Place mint plants in a sunny to part sunny location 18 inches apart. They need a normal well-draining soil, with an adequate watering. Cut frequently to encourage a bushier rather than taller growth, as these mints can grow too tall and spindly. Easy to grow but can be invasive. If space is an issue, it can be placed in containers. Cut back in the fall and the Apple Mint plant will return in the springtime
