The largest living tree in the world is among Earth's longest-lived and oldest tree species. Despite the length of the sequoia tree life span, the giant sequoia (Sequoiadendron giganteum) survived into modern times as a single species with only a few close relatives. In California's Sierra Nevada mountains, sequoia trees live on the west-facing slope at elevations between 4,500 feet and 8,000 feet. In their native habitat, giant sequoias may live up to 3,000 years and grow over 300 feet tall, with mature trees generally reaching heights between 200 and 275 feet. Sequoias grown in the eastern United States, however, usually reach only 40 to 60 feet in height. Giant sequoia trees grow best in full sun but will tolerate light shade. They like consistently moist (but not wet) climates and soils. Sequoias prefer soil that is deep, loose, well-drained, sandy loam. Giant sequoias do not tolerate dry soils, clay soils or extreme temperatures.
