Solanum (Black Nightshade) is an erect to sprawling, semi-evergreen to evergreen, perennial or sub-shrub boasting a profusion of small, trumpet-shaped, white flowers, 1 in. across (2.5 cm), adorned with a bouquet of prominent yellow stamens. Blooming in late winter to late spring, the flowers are visited by butterflies and moths. Borne on slender stems, the blossoms give way to pea-sized black berries. Birds feast on the fruit. The blossoms stand out nicely against the foliage of hairy, ovate to lance-shaped, dark green leaves, 2 in. long (5 cm). The leaves are summer deciduous if the plant is not given enough moisture. Solanum xanti is native to the western United States and Mexico, where it can be found growing in shrublands, oak/pine woodlands, and deciduous and coniferous forests in sandy, rocky, or clay soils.Black Nightshade is best used in habitat restoration, perennial borders, water-wise, and native plant gardens.
