Totally unlike the hardy perennial salvias we offer, this large woody perennial can be used as a hedge, as a filler for the back of the border, or in very large containers. It offers a flower color that is rarely seen in the garden: truly vibrant cobalt blue, hooded blossoms with contrasting near-black calyces and stems. These large flowers are produced in one sided racemes from midsummer to mid-fall, earlier in warmer climates. Deadheading will prolong the bloom time. Hummingbirds, butterflies, and bees devour their delicious nectar. The fragrant foliage grows quickly to form a large, upright clump, but can be kept smaller by trimming it back in late spring. This plant grows larger and is perennial in warmer climates, but it should be treated as a reseeding annual in the north.
