Noted for its enormous inflorescences, Hydrangea macrophylla produces stunning, rounded flower heads, up to 14 in across(35 cm), densely packed with sky blue to pink florets, depending on the soil pH. Blooming on both old and new growth, this reblooming mophead hydrangea flowers in early-mid summer on old growth and in midsummer to fall on new growth, guaranteeing a long season of interest. The profuse blossoms appear on a bushy plant, adorned with dark green, glossy leaves. This hydrangea is perfect as a specimen or in small groupings for the shady border. Great choice for flower arrangements too! The perfect location for bigleaf hydrangeas is a semi-shaded, wind-protected place in the garden or on the balcony. Hydrangea macrophylla are not particularly comfortable in a full-sun location, primarily because of their high water requirements. The watering water evaporates too quickly there, so the plants let their leaves and flowers droop. In addition, they can easily get sunburned when exposed to strong sunlight. Hydrangea macrophylla require a fresh, well-drained and slightly acidic soil with a high humus and nutrient content. Special hydrangea soil with a low pH value is offered in garden specialty stores. These are very suitable for planting in pots. After planting, the soil around the hydrangea should be mulched with bark mulch. This keeps the moisture in the soil and ensures that the pH value remains rather low. Tip: If you want to achieve a strong blue colouring of your hydrangea, you should plant it in a pot as this allows you to control the acidity better.
