Highly popular along the seacoast in Japan, Pinus thunbergii (Japanese Black Pine) is a glorious evergreen coniferous tree of usually shrubby habit, adorned with a curved trunk and wide-spreading branches that form a dense, dome-shaped or flattened crown. The lustrous, dark green, sharply pointed needles are borne in pairs. The interesting characteristic of this species is its silky white, candle-like buds, which contrast nicely with the dark green foliage. The buff to brown-gray cones are present in abundance, adding further interest. The bark is dark gray or purple-gray, scaly, and longitudinally fissured. A very beautiful pine that makes a terrific specimen tree. Popular as a bonsai plant and in Asian gardens. Japanese black pine grows best in sandy loam and in a sunny location. It is a good choice for salty locations, such as seashores, and it does well in both acidic and alkaline soils. If growing as a screen, space them at least 12 feet apart, as these dense trees will quickly fill in. As an isolated specimen tree, give it even more room, as there is the potential for it to reach 50 feet or more in height with a 25-foot width. Japanese black pine should get at least six hours of direct sunlight daily. Some light afternoon shade is acceptable. After you plant the tree, make sure it gets a full 1 inch of water per week for the first year. After the tree is established, it will be quite tolerant of short droughts and may not require any irrigation beyond ambient rainfall.
