Known as the father of the modern poster, Jules Cheret (1836 - 1932) was a French painter and lithographer. He worked on everything from theater to advertising. Here, the model, leatherette, is painting a shadow portrait of Adolphe Willette. The poster is an advertisement for an exhibition of the French artist's work. The cat is a nod to Willette who was a frequent contributor to the satirical publication, chat-noir.
