Known as the father of the modern poster, Jules Cheret (1836 - 1932) was a French painter and lithographer. He worked on everything from theater to advertising. Between 1893 and 1900, Cheret designed seven posters for the Palais de Glace, an ice-skating rink located on the Champs-Elysees. Here, the elongated format which he used for three of the designs, allowed him to more fully render the gracefully-controlled movement of his central figure.
