Known as the father of the modern poster, Jules Cheret (1836 - 1932) was a French painter and lithographer. He worked on everything from theater to advertising. Kola marque was one of the many fortified wines available in turn-of-the-century France. These products, made with Coca or Coffee, were sold to stimulate the body and spirit -not as a medicine, however, but as an aperitif. Here Cheret depicts a North African Dancer with a bottle in her hand. It is a simple poster, and his design is inhibited by the inclusion of too much text, which was a classic mistake made by early advertising clients.
